The latest satellite imaging reveals hurricanes Katrina and Rita killed 320 million trees in Mississippi and Louisiana, the single largest forestry disaster recorded in the United States. Carbon emissions from dead vegetation are estimated to be the equivalent of what it takes the rest of the US's forests to take out in a year. Federal aid to help replant trees is ineffective, and aggressive exotic tree species make it difficult for native tree species to regain a foothold.
